ROGUE READS
Our detection teams have been featured in books and publications!
Publications
This is not a full list of the publications we’ve contributed to but hopefully this gets you started on the right paw:
We co-authored the chapter, “The Role of Conservation Dog Detection and Ecological Monitoring,” in the textbook, Wildlife Biodiversity Conservation, Multidisciplinary and Forensic Approaches (2021).
Lead Instructor, Heath Smith, wrote the introduction to the book, “Using Detection Dogs to Monitor Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Protect Aquatic Resources.”
Read about our work at wind facilities, in this Research Gate publication, “Relative energy production determines effect of repowering on wildlife mortality at wind energy facilities,” and “Relating Bat Passage Rates to Wind Turbine Fatalities.”
Our detection teams contributed to carnivore surveys in Washington, “Prey partitioning between sympatric canid species revealed by DNA metabarcoding.”
Mink surveys with our detection dog teams before we founded Rogues, “Estimating population density and connectivity of American mink using spatial capture–recapture.”
A great resource on how odor moves on a landscape, “Cadaver Dog Handbook.”
Another great resource for those looking into getting into detection work, “Scent and the Scenting Dog.”
Books
Our detection teams have also been featured in a number of books!
Friend and conservation photographer, Isabelle Groc wrote “Conservation Canines: How Dogs Work For the Environment,” a wonderful book featuring many a Rogue Dog including the inspiration behind the book, our little miss Alli, as well as Dio, & Max. Orca Book Publishers (September 2021).
ALLI’S FUND FOR RETIRING CONSERVATION CANINES
Bounder, J. Hartman wrote this tribute to her detection dog, Max, for Lonely Conservationists. It’s now included in a book, “The Secret Life of Conservationists.”
Sniffer Dogs by Nancy Castaldo
Bounder, H. Smith, adopted & instructed Tucker, the orca whale sniffing dog featured on the cover, & went on to work with several dogs for this special project, including Rogue Dogs, Gator, Jack, and Dio.
Who Gives a Poop by Heather L. Montgomery
DYK: Rogue friend and researcher, Dr. HJ Kim with Bounder, J. Hartman & retired Rogue Dogs, Athena and Skye have a whole chapter devoted to them for their work sniffing for pangolin in Nepal and Vietnam. The pangolin is one of the most illegally trafficked animals in the world.
Send Me by Holly Cook
Working Dogs of the PNW
Our Rogue Dogs are featured in this book from our friend, Holly Cook. It celebrates the working dogs of the Pacific Northwest, including therapy dogs with Project Canine, Search and Rescue Dogs as well as Truffle Hunting Dogs.
Super Sniffers by Dorothy Hinshaw Patent
We triple dog dare you to find our Rogue Dogs and bounders featured! This book came out before we went Rogue!
Poop Detectives by Ginger Wadsworth
Working Dogs in the Field
This book is a blast from the past, as it includes our time from before we went Rogue! Featuring our favorite pups; Max, Pips, Frehley, Gator, Chester, Waylon, Pepsi, Alli, Winnie, and Scooby. Oh and of course our favorite Bounders, Jennifer and Heath!
The Last Woman in the Forest by Diane Les Becquets
Not for the faint of heart, a few of our Rogue bounders contributed to author Diane's research into the conservation detection dog methodology, which is a centerpiece of her thriller.
Ball by Mary Sullivan
A 2014 Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book
While not about our Rogue Dogs, if any of our dogs could write a book, it would be very similar to Mary Sullivan’s hilarious story.
